Investigating the Health of our Lakes

Loweswater Village Hall. 7.00pm Free Entry. Cash bar.

Part 1: Buttermere Nutrient Investigations

The first half of our evening looks at Buttermere. The subject of a Nutrient Investigations Project, carried out by the West Cumbria Rivers Trust. The lake is oligotrophic, meaning its water is naturally clean, clear and low in nutrients creating a rare habitat for wildlife including Arctic Charr.

Project Officers Laura Hutchinson and Bethany Berry-Henshaw will be reporting back to our community on their findings helping us understand the impact of agriculture and tourism could have on our water quality and the threat of algal growth. If you visit Buttermere you can help the project by completing the survey below:

Part 2: Spotlight on the Charr

After a break for refreshments (cash bar!), our second half will spotlight the work being done by the Freshwater Biological Association, specifically LD-CHARM, a project to explore the conservation actions required to sustain and protect Arctic charr populations in the Lake District.

We will be screening CHARR, a film celebrating this rare and iconic Lake District fish.
